CAROLS, CANDLELIGHT, COMMUNION

This simple, beautiful service focuses our attention on the joy of the season. We read from the scriptures, sing the favorite carols of Christmas accompanied by a string ensemble, and reflect on Jesus’ entry into the world. At the end of the service, the entire sanctuary is filled with candlelight as we sing “Silent Night.”

Please join us Friday, December 24, in person or online, at 7 p.m. as we welcome the light of the world with carols, candlelight, and communion in the warmth of Union Avenue Christian Church.

During Advent, we have been examining combining the “tried and true” with the “wide and new” to help us get back into the habits of faith and discipleship while also growing beyond the comfortable and routine we've come to expect. We've been exploring stories of women and mothers every Sunday, following the excellent new work A Women's Lectionary for the Whole Church by the Rev. Dr. Wilda C. Gafney (read about her here). Each Sunday, we've heard various stories of annunciation found throughout the bible: those of Hagar, Sarah, the mother of Samson, and Hannah alongside that of Mary (and her elder cousin Elizabeth too!). We've taken a fresh look at these stories about women, examining the intersectional oppressions they name as we prepare to learn again how Jesus makes incarnate God's mission of love.
