FIND YOUR WAY BACK ...

During Lent, Rev. Michael Riggs begins a new sermon series, entitled Find Your Way Back, that explores classic themes and texts of the season in new and fresh ways as we journey out of the wilderness and into newness of life with the God of Easter.

On the First Sunday in Lent, February 18, “An Itch to Scratch” explores the familiar story of the temptation of Jesus (Matt. 4:1-11) and how we can easily be tempted away from doing what God wants us to truly do.

On the Second Sunday in Lent, February 25, “Revisionist Christology” looks closer at the story of the Confession at Philippi (Mark 8:27-38) and asks us to name how all too often disciples try to tell Jesus what his job description should be, to name how we need to stop remaking Christ in our own image and instead embrace the radical identity of the Servant we claim to follow.

On the Third Sunday in Lent, March 4, “Looking for a Loophole” examines the story of Jesus telling a lawyer the parable of a “Good” Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) and how we today try to find a way to redefine “neighbor” in more palatable terms.

On Lætáre Sunday (the Fourth Sunday in Lent), March 11, “Got Bread?” revisits the story of the Feeding of the Multitudes (Mark 6:30-44) and the Yeast of the Pharisees (Mark 8:11-21) and how we sometimes get distracted from what is right in front of us.

On the Fifth Sunday in Lent, March 18, “Cryin’ Mad” reconsiders the story of the Raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-46) and the shortest verse in the Bible, “Jesus wept” (11:35), and the cause for Jesus’s tears both then and today.

On Palm Sunday (the Sixth Sunday in Lent and the beginning of Holy Week), March 25, “Competing Parades” considers the many and broken expectations coming into Jerusalem for the Passover (Mark 11:1 – 25) and how Jesus’s entry into the Holy City moves from triumph to impending tragedy.

This Lent, come and “Find Your Way Back” to the heart of God.
